It's Only A Test: Active Shooter Exercise Taking Place Near Wayne State
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are warning people near Wayne State University not to be alarmed -- it's only a test.
Campus police will be conducting a mock active shooter training exercise and drill from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday.
The drill will take place in the area of 6001 Cass Avenue, between York and Burroughs streets, just north of I-94 across from the campus police station.
The most visible portion of the drill is expected to take place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. During that timeframe, citizens may see multiple WSUPD scout cars throughout the area with their lights and sirens activated. Marked squad cars might also be blocking streets, temporarily interrupting the traffic flow.
Police are especially warning citizens not to panic if they see heavily armed officers on foot, or "injured persons" being evacuated from buildings and taken to a staged triage area with ambulances.
"There is no cause of alarm as this will only be a training exercise and drill to test our ability to rapidly and effectively respond to an active shooter incident in the Midtown area," police said in a statement.
