Is There A White Christmas In The Forecast For Metro Detroit?
DETROIT (WWJ) - If you're dreaming of a white Christmas this year, AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Bowers says you may be disappointed.
"That's always the million dollar question ... It's really too hard to say," Bowers said, "but given the pattern we're forecasting for the month of December, our odds are perhaps smaller than they would be in a normal December weather pattern."
"Perhaps not this year," he added.
Talking to WWJ Newsradio 950 on Thursday, Bowers said metro Detroiters can look forward to a slightly warmer December, with below-average snowfall overall.
"We're also thinking that the storm track is going to be such that precipitation will actually be above normal for the winter as a whole," he said, "but since December is going to be a little milder than normal, that just might mean more rain."
Bowers said, however, Michiganders should prepare for plenty of snow in the following winter months.
"As you get into January and February, you know, what's normal is so cold that if you're in a stormy track that would spell an awful lot of snow," Bowers said. "So we actually have a prediction for an above normal snowfall for most of Michigan, Wisconsin, back through Iowa and into Kansas."
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting an overall average winter for Michigan and the Great Lakes Region.
