Is Nike Being Sexist With 'Gold Digging' T-Shirt?
By: Ryan Wooley
With the Olympics now behind us and our American athletes now adjustig to life back at home, Nike is still looking to capitalize off the gold medals that the members of Team USA brought back by releasing a shirt that is creating a lot of controversy.
The shirt in question retails for $24.99 and features the word "Gold Digging" on the front with the Nike swoosh underneath and is only available for women, which is why some people are crying foul.
I'm sure most people know what a gold digger is but for those of you that don't, it is a woman that is out for a man's money and the term really became mainstream back in 2005 when Kanye West released this song called "Gold Digger".
Now I can understand to a point why Nike only made the shirt for women because I don't know how many men would have purchased it as is, but couldn't they have used a better slogan that would have made the same impact and sold it to both men and women? Maybe something like; "Dreams Are Golden", "Simply Golden" or "Good As Gold"?
I personally am not upset over the shirt and don't think they should stop selling it because like any piece of clothing, if you have a problem with it then don't buy it. The only thing I have a problem with is that they geared it towards just women and used a sexist term in the process.
But what about you? Do you think Nike was being sexist in the creation of this shirt and would you buy one?
