Is Musberger At It Again?
By: Jamie Samuelsen
Brent Musberger has not apologized for making Katherine Webb an Internet sensation. Nor should he.
Musberger famously made VERY flattering comments about Webb's appearance during the BCS Championship game last Monday. If you're one of the only human beings on the planet who didn't see Musberger heap praise on Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron's girlfriend, here it is for the one-millionth time.
I had no issue with Musberger. He complimented a woman's appearance. Big deal. And Webb had no issue with it either. She went on "The Today Show" last Wednesday and said she enjoyed the attention and was surprised that ESPN felt the need to apologize. She also scored a spot in next month's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, further evidence that no apology was necessary from the network.
Musberger was silent about the event, certainly furious that people thought he did anything wrong, until last night. He called the Kansas-Baylor game on ESPN along with Fran Fraschilla and Holly Rowe. Musberger said nothing during the game, but as he was signing off, he dropped this little nugget…
Now ESPN has already come out and said that Musberger's exact quote was. "It was really smokin' tonight." But I'm sorry. I've watched it five times and it sounds like Musberger said, "Holly Rowe, who was really smokin' tonight."
And if Brent said that, he is by far the coolest announcer in sports media today.
