Interest In Keeping Asian Carp Out Of Great Lakes Put Into High Gear
DETROIT (WWJ) - A week after the electric barrier meant to keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes had a power outage, the government says finding a permanent solution has been put into high gear.
John Goss from the White House Council on Environmental Quality says the Army Corps of Engineers will come up with several possible solutions, gather feedback and come up with a final recommendation.
"The Corps will now provide Congress and the public the chance to identify a permanent Asian Carp solution in 2013 - much earlier than expected," said Goss.
He says the carp are still several miles away from the electric barrier that had the power problem last week.
"The reason for doing this is not only because we realize the urgency but also we are going to be able to look at those alternatives and be able to make a determination once we have input from the public and congress," said Jo-Ellen Darcy from the Army Corps of Engineers.
