Infertility Awareness Week Puts Emphasis On Education
DETROIT (WWJ) - About eight to ten percent of men and women suffer from infertility, a medical condition that can usually be treated with the right diagnosis.
And Dr. Carole Kowalczyk, a Michigan-based fertility specialist, says it's important that people understand they are not alone. She says that's why during this National Infertility Awareness Week, she wants people to know when they should see their physicians.
"Not many people know that if you're under age 35, a year of trying is enough to try before talking to your OB/GYN and your fertility specialist. As women age over 35, the time frame for actively trying to get pregnant is six months," said Kowalcyzk.
Kowalcyzk says in 90 percent of the cases, couples can find out why they're not getting pregnant.
"It's important for people to be aware that it's a very common medical condition, that affects about 8 to 10 percent of the general population," she said. "It affects both men and women, and just like a medical condition of diabetes, high blood pressure, it is something that needs proper evaluation."
