Woman Killed In Multi-Car Accident On I-96

DETROIT (WWJ) - Four vehicles were involved in a deadly accident on a busy section of I-96 in Detroit, forcing the freeway to close for hours during the early morning commute.

The accident happened just after 4 a.m. Wednesday on westbound I-96 and Grand River Avenue, on the city's west side.

According to Michigan State Police, 21-year-old Felicia Smith of Detroit lost control of her car, wasn't wearing a seatbelt, and was thrown out of her SUV when it rolled over.

Two subsequent crashes occurred as other drivers tried to avoid the SUV flipped in the first wreck; one involving a semi truck. Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell said two vehicles had front-end damage while a third vehicle was so mangled, it was unidentifiable.

Smith was declared dead at the scene. It's unknown how badly anyone else was injured.

All lanes of westbound I-96 were closed at Livernois Avenue for about four hours while police investigated, but have since reopened.
