Police: Woman Killed On I-94 Was Fighting With Friend When Driver Lost Control, Alcohol May Be A Factor
HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities say a woman who was fatally injured in a crash on I-94 in Macomb County was fighting with her friend inside the vehicle before the accident, and alcohol might be a factor.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, after police received a 911 call from a 20-year-old Chesterfield Township woman who said her vehicle had crashed on I-94 "near exit 235."
Macomb County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene within minutes and discovered that three women had been in a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck that was travelling westbound on I-94 near Shook Road in Harrison Township.
Police say the back seat passenger, a 21-year-old Eastpointe woman, got into a physical altercation with the front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old Roseville woman. As the women fought, police say the driver lost control of the pick-up truck and stuck a guardrail on the west side of the freeway.
During the crash, the Roseville woman was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to McLaren Macomb Hospital where she was declared dead.
"The roadway was wet at the time of the crash and the altercation that was occurring between to the two passengers may have contributed to the driver's inability to safely operate the vehicle," police said in a statement. "Alcohol use may also be a contributing factor."
The driver was taken to the Sheriff's office and has been cooperating with the detectives, police said.
The freeway was closed at Metro Parkway for almost four hours while police investigated the crash scene, but has since reopened.
An investigation is ongoing.
