I-275 Closed After Hazardous Material Leaks From Semi
CANTON (WWJ) - Northbound I-275 was closed at Ford Roaf for hours, Friday, as crews cleaned up after a hazardous material situation.
Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said the substance leaking was aliphatane resin, more commonly know as yellow glue or carpenter's glue. Shaw said the substance does not pose a health hazard, but could be combustible.
The leak stretched from about Ford Road to where the truck stopped at Ann Arbor Trail.
Drivers calling the WWJ Newsroom complained about some kind of "gunk" on their vehicles after passing through the area. Larry Parks was driving home from work when he noticed a strange wet-looking substance on the road.
"I'm starting to see little droplets on my windshield, so I get off on Ann Arbor Road. There's this guy in a semi-box truck, he hasn't opened the back door yet, but it's just pouring out the back corner, because his truck is tipped a little bit on the passenger side. It's this clear looking liquid," he said.
Parks said the material left streaks on his windshield, and going to the car wash didn't help.
"It's still stuck on my car and I've even gone through a car wash. I washed it with a foam brush and I thought I was doing pretty good until I pulled out of the car wash, turned my wipers on and it's still stuck on there," he said.
Fire officials and HAZMAT crews were called the the scene. The freeway was closed just about all day, reopening just after 4 p.m. in time for the afternoon drive.
