Husband Fatally Shot In Detroit Home Invasion, Wife Escapes Through Window; Was Medical Marijuana Involved?

DETROIT (WWJ) - Three suspects are on the run after a man is shot dead and his wife sent running for her life during a home invasion, and police are trying to figure out if medical marijuana is behind hit all.

The situation unfolded around 3 a.m. Friday at a home on Ward Street, near the Lodge Freeway and McNichols Road on the city's west side.

Margie Taylor says her 60-year-old husband, Lester, was answering their front door when chaos broke out.

"Somebody rung the front doorbell and he let them in, so apparently he knew the person. Once he let the person in, you heard the gunshot," Taylor told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "And then the person came to my room."

Taylor said what happened next was like divine intervention.

"He tried to shoot me at my door but the gun locked up and that's when I was able to jump out the window," she said.

Taylor frantically went running for her life and hid behind some bushes, where she called 911 and she saw three people running down the street -- presumably the suspects.

Paramedics arrived at the home and rushed Lester Taylor to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"There was only one shot so he must have shot my husband at close range, you know what I'm saying," said Margie Taylor. "My husband knew him so he probably seen the gun and probably -- I don't know what happened but it was close because you could just tell it was a close shot because he had to be up on the person."

Police are now trying to locate the suspects.

Investigators did find marijuana plants inside the home, and police say that both of the Taylors are licensed with the Michigan's marijuana program -- but they're not sure if that had anything to do with the shooting.

At this point, Margie Taylor said she has no idea who would want to hurt her or her husband, a father of 13 children.

"People are so grimy around here, so I don't know," she said.

An investigation is ongoing.
