Hunt For State Christmas Tree Begins

LANSING (WWJ) - The search is on for the next state Christmas tree to stand on the Capitol lawn in Lansing later this year.

State officials are looking for a spruce or fir tree that's at least 65-feet tall. The tree also should be available for free, be easily accessible from the road and have no interference from wires.

In past years, trees have been found in various locations across the state, including the far reaches of the Upper Peninsula. Last year's tree came from Jackson.

Phil Jeffery, chief deputy director for the Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB), said it might seem a little odd to begin searching for a Christmas tree in the summer, but they have to get the ball rolling early on such a lengthy project.

"In order to have time to conduct the search and be ready for the lighting festivities in November, this is when we need to start the process," Jeffery said in a statement.

Once a tree is selected, DTMB partners with the Michigan Association of Timbermen and the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association to bring it to Lansing. After delivery of the tree, a DTMB crew then works with Hi-Ball Company of Lansing, who volunteers a crane and crew to set the tree.

It all culminates with the lighting of the tree in downtown Lansing as part of the Annual Silver Bells in the City celebration in November.

Nominations are due by July 31. Individuals wishing to nominate a tree are asked to send their name, telephone number, a photograph of the tree and information about its size and location to ChristmasTree@michigan.gov, or by mail to:
