Hunger Action Month: Doubling your donation to Forgotten Harvest
OAK PARK, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - September is Hunger Action Month, and this year a local foundation is teaming up with Michigan-based Forgotten Harvest to help raise awareness and funds for the cause.
"This is our chance to spread the word about the importance of helping people who are fighting against hunger," said Forgotten Harvest CEO Kirk Mayes.
For the month of September, PNC Foundation is matching Forgotten Harvest donations, up to $25,000.
"The reason why we're here is because people need help," said Mayes. "In order for us to do what we have to do, we get trucks and food and we bring it to the places where people need that help. So help us with our fuel, help us with our expenses to get that food."
Forgotten Harvest said there are over 660,000 hungry neighbors in the Metro Detroit area.
Last year, Forgotten Harvest rescued over 42 million pounds of food by collection surplus prepared and perishable food from more than 530 locations.
"Every donation that's given to Forgotten Harvest has about a seven dollar multiplier in groceries for everyone that we serve in our community," said Mayes. "If you give us $10, that's about $70 worth of groceries that gets into somebody's hands so they can actually do what they need to do to feed their family."
In addition to donating, anyone can also show support by wearing orange on Sept. 23, Hunger Action Day, then post a picture to social media with the hashtags #HungerActionMonth and #ForgottenHarvest.
