Hundreds To Walk For Suicide Prevention
MILFORD (WWJ) - This weekend, hundreds of Metro Detroiters will come together to shine a light on a topic many people are uncomfortable talking about — suicide.
WWJ Health Reporter Sean Lee spoke with local mom Kelly Miller, who's fighting to raise awareness on the issue.
Kelly Miller's son Noah who was just 13 when he lost his battle with undiagnosed depression in February of 2012.
"He had a girlfriend, a new girlfriend," she said. "[He was] funny; a very funny kid ... happy as can be."
Miller the signs of the disorder can be tough for parents to distinguish from typical teen behavior.
"I would never, in a million years, have looked at my child and known this boy would take his own life," Miller said.
Now Miller is on a mission to channel the grief from her unimaginable loss into the effort to save other parents, families and friends from the pain she lives with everyday.
"I can either sit around and do nothing and hide and sit in my room and just cry all day long, or I can get up, pull myself up and go do something about it," she said.
You can join Miller, and many others like her, to raise money and awareness for depression and suicide prevention, this Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Out of the Darkness Walk at Kensington Metro Park in Milford.
