Hundreds March In Support Of Jobs For Vets
DETROIT (WWJ) - On Veterans Day, a crowd gathered in Detroit to rally for jobs for vets.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis reported a couple hundred people, many carrying signs, marched along the Second Avenue bridge over I-94 chanted "Pass the bill", in reference to President Barack Obama's jobs legislation.
The focus, though, was specifically on military veterans, like Tony Leo of Detroit who served eight years in the U.S. Marines.
"When I got out of the service, it was a little difficult getting a job," said Leo. "I got my unemployment and I seek to go back to school, because the job I was in in the service ... that was in tanks," he said.
Veterans on hand for Friday's rally said word that the U.S. Senate passed part of the jobs bill giving tax credits to veterans is good news, but, "That's only one step. The next step is Congressman John Boehner and the House of Representatives passing the legislation."
That's according to Rev. Charles Williams II, head of the Good News Jobs organization that helped organize Friday's march.
