Hundreds From Michigan Join 'Take Back The Capitol' Campaign
DETROIT (WWJ) - They are out to "Take Back the Capitol." Over 700 Metro Detroiters plan to spend the week in Washington D.C. to right what they feel is an economic imbalance that's put people out of work.
Charlene Jenkins, with the Service Employees International Union, is among the unemployed hoping to see some changes.
"It's okay to be wealthy, that's fine. That's fine. That's what American's based on ... that's OK," Jenkins told WWJ Newsradio 950's Ron Dewey
"But, let's get your people, who elect you in this office ... let's make sure that they have a place to stay, that they have a job, that they have a meal, that they can take care of their families," she said.
Jenkins said Congress says needs to address the economic imbalance that she feels is keeping so many people out of work. She wants Washington to encourage companies to start hiring again.
"Look at the shelters. They're full," said Jenkins. "We have so many people trying to get into shelters, that they're just too full. That tells us even though the numbers may say unemployment went down ... it doesn't appear that way out here," she said.
Jenkins said she expects 10,000 people nationwide to take part in this week's "Take Back the Capitol" protests.
