Hundreds Expected To Take Part In Volunteer Day
As many as one thousand Metro Detroiters of all ages, and different faiths, will gather, Friday, to take part in JCRC Volunteer Day.
A part of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's "Mitzvah Month," this day of volunteerism will bring together several hundred individuals from around the region to perform meaningful acts of community service.
WWJ spoke with JCRC Volunteer Day co-chair, Micki Grossman, who says the Jewish community will once again welcome fellow volunteers of a different faith.
"This year, as well as last year, we have partnered with some Muslim volunteers. So, that there are places that Muslims and Jews will be volunteers together because they also have a philosophy of doing good for the world," Grossman said.
Families and single volunteers will donate a few hours of their time to participate in a variety of pre-assigned activities throughout the day, including visits to older adults in nursing care facilities, preparing and serving holiday meals, and delivering gifts to families in need.
"I think we give back to the community all year round in different ways... but somehow Christmas brings it out more than ever. The holiday season just fills everyone with the spirit. We've just been celebrating which is a different type of holiday than Christmas, but we learn to give and to share and to honor. And it makes us know that we're living in a country where we can help one another," Grossman said.
"I mean, when you see that we can give Christians time off so that they can prepare or celebrate their holiday -- and yet we as Jews, and now the Muslim community can do the same thing, too ... I hope it blurs some of the lines of differences," she said.
