Jars Of Human Tissue Reportedly Found In Detroit-Area Doctor's Car; Was OB-GYN Performing Illegal Abortions?
WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - A Detroit-area OB-GYN specialist is under police scrutiny after jars of apparent human tissue were found in his car, leading many to wonder if the doctor was performing off-the-record abortions out of his vehicle.
The 75-year-old physician's vehicle was impounded two weeks ago after he was involved in an accident that seriously injured a special needs child. It happened at the recently opened roundabout at 14 Mile and Orchard Lake roads in West Bloomfield.
In conducting their crash investigation, police obtained a search warrant on the doctor's car and that's when they discovered at least one dozen jars containing what is thought to be human tissue -- fetal tissue by some reports. Investigators also found medical equipment and large amounts of Fentanyl, a controlled drug used for pain and sedation.
Local police notified the State Attorney General's office, as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration and FBI, and executed a search warrant at the doctor's West Bloomfield home on Tuesday.
The doctor's name isn't being released at this time because he isn't facing charges. He has been identified as an OB-GYN specialist who works out of Novi.
According to reports, the doctor has been investigated by state authorities several times on accusations of negligence, incompetence and lacking of moral character. The health department has previously put him on probation, in addition to levying a $15,000 fine. Reports say he also pleaded no contest to violations of public health codes for performing a botched abortion, misinforming patients, incomplete record keeping and improper pharmaceutical tracking and storing.
