(CBS DETROIT) - An investigation is underway after human remains were found Monday afternoon outside of a home on Detroit's west side.

Police were called at about 12:57 p.m. to the 19700 block of Woodingham Drive after construction workers found the remains.

Police told CBS News Detroit that the home was unoccupied, and the homeowner had hired construction workers to make repairs for new tenants when they discovered the remains.

Investigators are working to exhume the body for identification.

Neighbors say the home was empty for about a year after a family with two adults and five children suddenly moved out.

"Nobody knew they left. They packed up in the middle of the night and were gone the next day," said Nadia Morris, who's lived in the neighborhood for 15 years.

Investigators described the remains as someone who was "small in stature." It is unknown if the individual is male or female or how long the remains were at the home.

"It is an extremely sad day and we will exhaust our resources to hold the people accountable," said Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes.
