Engineering Society of Detroit Institute Appoints Co-Director, Bill Liebold: The Engineering Society of Detroit Institute (ESDI) has appointed Bill Liebold as its new co-director effective immediately. Liebold will fill the position of David A. Skiven, who passed away in November 2011. He will work alongside ESDI's other co-director and co-founder, Christopher J. Webb. Liebold comes to ESDI with an impressive career in the political and non-profit sectors. From 1991-2008 he served as president of the Michigan Colleges Foundation and led the organization to the most successful period in its 63-year history. Under his leadership, MCF raised more than $32 million for its member liberal arts colleges, doubled its endowment and established named scholarship programs with many of the state's leading corporations and foundations. Prior to entering the world of not for-profits, Liebold spent eight years (from 1983-1991) as special assistant and cabinet secretary to Michigan Gov. James J. Blanchard. In this role he raised a record-setting $1.7 million for non-profit organizations as chair of the first-ever Michigan State Employees Combined Campaign. In addition to his new position at ESDI, Liebold will continue his work as president of The Liebold Group, LLC, where he advises non-profit organizations, specializing in board building, resource development, interim CEO service, senior executive coaching and small and large group facilitation. Liebold earned a bachelor's degree (with distinction) from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a Master's of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California's Washington, D.C. Macomb County welcomes new IT Director: Macomb County has hired a new IT director. Sandy Jurek will supervise a department of 32 employees when she begins her duties on Aug. 20. Jurek was chosen from a field of more than 80 applicants for the position, which has been vacant since November 2010. Jurek has served as a consultant with Oakland County's e-government unit for the past 12 years. Jurek's various roles were as chief strategist, project manager, and usability specialist for numerous areas in Oakland County's Department of Information Technology. She has led and managed project teams in website and data architecture, e-commerce and software development, usability and design, training and support, and overall business process re-engineering. Most recently, Sandy has been managing the development and implementation of Oakland County's new G2G Cloud Solutions Initiative, which provides technology services to governments of all sizes across the state of Michigan. Prior to working at Oakland County, Jurek was the production and marketing director for Gyro Design Group, Web and publications editor for Detroit Public Television, director of MetroTimes.com, and senior editor at Gale Publishing Group. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Michigan University and resides in her hometown of St. Clair Shores with her husband and son.
Lawrence Tech names chair for Department of Architecture: Scott Shall has been named an associate professor and chair of the Department of Architecture at Lawrence Technological University. Previously Shall taught five years at Temple University in Philadelphia and five years at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He earned his bachelor's degree in architecture at the University of Cincinnati and his master's degree in architecture at Tulane University in New Orleans. Part of Lawrence Tech's College of Architecture and Design, the Department of Architecture enrolls more than 700 undergraduate and graduate students. In 2006, Shall was the founding director of the International Design Clinic, a non-profit that realizes creative work with communities in need around the world. To date, he has completed more than a dozen projects on four continents, including an urban tent for the homeless made of reclaimed water bottles; an educational system based upon borrowed resources for the migrant communities of India; and a school system formed from the vending architectures of Bolivia for kids working the streets of La Paz. Shall has presented his research at symposia and conferences around the world, and his writing on socially responsive design has been featured in a range of peer-reviewed publications, including works by MIT Press, the American Institute of Architects Press and the University of Indianapolis Press. Shall has exhibited his creative work at solo shows around the world, including solo shows at the San Francisco Museum of Art in La Paz, Bolivia, and the AIA Center for Architecture in Philadelphia and group shows at the Sheldon Swope Museum of Art and the Goldstein Museum of Design. Ann Arbor Web Design Firm Announces New Digital Director: Ann Arbor-based 3.7 Designs announced the hiring of Tom Gluszk as digital director. Gluszk brings a wealth of experience in search engine optimization, pay-per-click advertising and website analytics. Gluszk's duties are focused on generating sales and leads for 3.7 Designs clients. This includes optimizing website content, managing pay-per-click campaigns, developing social media strategies and online media buying. He has bachelor's degrees in psychology and political science from the University of Michigan. With a keen interest in decision-making and a passion for digital marketing, Gluszk developed a system for understanding consumer behavior and the variables that influence decision-making.
