Detroit Science Fair Names Coordinator For Detroit Public Schools: The Board of Directors of the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit  announced the selection of Nasreen Jalili as science fair coordinator serving the Detroit Public Schools. For many years, Detroit Public Schools ranked high in Science Fair participation and sent several senior-category winners on to further levels of competition. In recent years, participation has dwindled. Earlier this school year, Tim Fino, SEFMD fair director, extended an offer to Detroit Public Schools. "We established a new staff position -- 'DPS High School Science Fair Coordinator' -- to keep our focus on Detroit Public Schools," Fino said. "We selected Ms. Jalili because of her many years as a science teacher, including 14 years in the Detroit system." The role of the new Science Fair Coordinator is to support teacher and student involvement in science fair investigations, experiments, demonstrations and participation. Jalili will also motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific investigations and practices. Under her direction, students will also develop skills in scientific problem solving and discover practices of scientific research. The 54th Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit will be held March 15-19 at Cobo Center in Detroit. It is open to the public free March 17-18 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Students are encouraged to enter the Science Fair through their schools to earn recognition and key financial awards and scholarships.
