How Do You Feel About Paying Higher Sales Taxes?
LANSING, Mich. (WWJ) - What do you think about paying more sales tax? It's a possibility, as a plan is currently emerging in the State Capitol to raise the sales tax from six to seven percent to help pay for road maintenance.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports that Michigan voters could decide the fate of this issue when they head to the polls to vote in the general election in November.
Currently, a sales tax collected at the pump raises $1.2 billion annually. But that money now goes to the schools and to the cities. What lawmakers would like to do is leave that tax in place, but put that $1.2 billion into the roads.
If the measure makes it onto the ballot - which looks likely - lawmakers would have to have a 2/3 vote by Sept. 6th. Then, if voters approved it, the sales tax would increase to seven percent. The additional money raised would go to the schools and to the cities.
