Man Pleads Guilty To Spreading HIV, Wanted To 'Kill'
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - A Grand Rapids-area man who told police he wanted to kill others by spreading the HIV virus has pleaded guilty to failing to inform a sex partner that he was HIV-positive.
The Grand Rapids Press reports 51-year-old David Smith of Comstock Park entered his plea Monday and was found competent to stand trial. Smith was diagnosed with mental illness in October.
Smith told police he'd been having unprotected sex. He said there were many partners, but only knew a few names.
Smith remains in the Kent County jail. The name of his attorney wasn't known.
The Kent County Health Department previously urged people who had sex with Smith to contact the agency for an HIV test. The department said Smith suggested he was intentionally trying to spread the virus.
