Hit And Run Preludes Multi Vehicle Crash
GRASS LAKE TWP. (WWJ) - Police in Jackson County say a hit and run accident was the catalyst for a multi vehicle crash Sunday night that left three people hospitalized.
Investigators say the crash started when a Ford Escort, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Jonesville, was rear ended by a red car driven by an unknown male just before 8 p.m. Sunday on westbound I-94, west of Clear Lake Road. The driver of the red vehicle fled the scene, west on I-94.
After the initial crash, a 29-year-old man from Dearborn who was a passenger in the Escort, got out and started to push the car out of the roadway. The man was then struck by a third vehicle driven by an 18-year-old man from Michigan Center.
The Michigan Center man was attempting to slow down for the initial crash, when he was rear-ended by a car driven by a 44-year-old woman from Wisconsin.
Two people from the crash were transported by ambulance to the University of Michigan hospital and one person was transported to Allegiance Hospital. The injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.
Police say alcohol was not a factor for those that remained at the scene and seat belts were utilized. Speed was a factor in the initial crash and the Wisconsin woman was cited for not being able to stop in assured clear distance ahead, according to police.
Investigators are asking anyone with any information on the red vehicle that fled the scene to contact the tip line at 517-768-7936.
