'Hire Harbaugh' Campaign Looks To Raise $1 Million To Lure 49ers Coach To Michigan
ANN ARBOR (CBS Detroit) -- One Michigan Wolverines fan is working to raise a million dollars to lure alumnus and current San Francisco 49ers head coach back to Ann Arbor.
Ali Husain, founder of the "Hire Harbaugh" campaign, said that the University of Michigan football team needs to rise back to its elite status, so he started a project in hopes of luring Harbaugh to coach the Wolverines.
"If we look at college football -- or really football in general -- the success of the team is highly dependent on the coach," Husain said. "There's only a handful of really elite coaches out there, so Michigan now is down and we need to have an elite coach come resurrect us -- who better than one of the best coaches in the game and a former standout quarterback for us."
So far, the campaign has raised nearly $5,000.
"You make a pledge, anywhere from $5 up to a couple thousand dollars and that pledge will add to our total," Husain said. "What that will serve as is incentive to Jim Harbaugh to come to Michigan."
If they raise a million dollars and Harbaugh accepts, the money will be given to a charity of his choice. If Harbaugh doesn't accept, however, then all the money will be refunded to donors.
"It seems that the majority of the Michigan fanbase would want to have Jim Harbaugh as our next coach," Husain said. "We've come up with an innovative way to kind of tip the scales in our favor and make him think twice, and really consider coming back home to the Big House."
