'Hillacream' And 'Trumpkin' Pies Featuring Candidates' Faces Big Sellers For Local Baker
DETROIT (WWJ) - For those tired of the bitterness of the presidential campaign, one Detroit area bakery is offering a sweet alternative.
How about a nice slice of Hillacream or Trumpkin pumpkin pie?
"We were kind of just trying to keep it light and kind of more playful, because it has been so tense overall," said Courtney Major, manager and pie artist at Achatz Handmade Pie Company of Metro Detroit. "I mean, even customers can get really, you know, into it when they're talking to us about it; so we're trying to keep it light."
"It is important, obviously, to vote," she added.
The pies sell for $21.99 and are available through Election Day — each featuring a candidate's faces which are made with a frozen chocolate stencil.
Major said sales of the political pies have been brisk at all their locations, as well as nationally online.
"From New York, Califormia — I mean, it's all over the place," she told WWJ's Jon Hewett. "It's been shocking to say the least! ...I didn't think it would take off like this."
While preferences have seemed to vary from store to store, Major said, when it comes to national orders the Hillacream pie has been the bigger seller by a landslide.
Achatz has six retail outlets in Michigan: Armada, Beverly Hills, Chesterfield, Oxford, Shelby Twp. and Troy.
