Highland Park Post Office Reopens Following Fire
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - The frustration is finally over for Highland Park residents when it comes to their mail service.
Their post office has been closed for the past month, following a fire that engulfed an abandoned 5-story building nearby.
But the post office reopened Monday morning with a ribbon-cutting.
"We have been working together through this process daily," said Highland Park mayor DeAndre Windom. "It started with prayer at City Hall and from that effort you have seen a miracle actually here, with the demolition of the building -- with us getting the funds to tear the building down with an expedited process."
Detroit postmaster Lloyd Wesley, Jr. said the city was concerned with the safety of postal employees.
"The possibility of the building collapsing yet and falling over to the Highland Park branch there with the employees inside, so we had to take the employees and put them first," Wesley said.
Monday morning demolition on the burned-out building is almost complete.
