Highland Park Officer Ambushed, Killed In Nightclub Shooting
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Multiple suspects are in police custody after a reserve officer with the Highland Park Police Department was gunned down outside of a nightclub in Detroit.
The incident unfolded late Friday night when shots were fired outside the Opyum Bar and Lounge on 8 Mile and Telegraph roads on the city's west side.
The off-duty officer, who was working security, apparently kicked two men out of the club earlier in the night. The men allegedly waited outside and ambushed the officer when the club closed.
The officer, described as a former Army Ranger, was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Highland Park Police Chief Kevin Coney said investigators are working to ferret out the details of the situation, and will release more information later Saturday.
The officer had been with the department for about two years. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of family members.
"He was a good officer," said Coney. "He was an Army veteran, he did a tour over in Iraq, just a stand-up guy. We never had any problems or issues with him."
