Highland Park Mayor Shrugs Off Recall Attempt
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - The embattled mayor of Highland Park is shrugging off attempts to boot him out of office.
Residents have cited several reasons as to why Deandre Windom should be recalled as the city's mayor.
Marian Kramer, of the Highland Park Human Rights Coalition, said she supports the recall effort mainly because of the situation with the water department and her $1,300 water bill.
"We're being set up for failure in the sense that they can snatch our houses. So, you know, the mayor has been doing quite a few things that's been incorrect and he needs to go and I'm one that's going to be in the forefront of making sure that that type of stuff happens," she said.
The Highland Park Water Department closed down late last year, putting all of the city's residents on the Detroit water system. At the time, Windom attributed "wide-ranging problems" at the plant to years of deferred maintenance.
"It's been continuous lying and lying going on as far as this administration, and we're the ones... that are suffering from this," Kramer said.
Windom, who was standing by as Kramer voiced her opinion, said the water issue is one that is a work in progress.
"We're working on that and we're getting to a point where we're about to have the bills coming out and everything will be back consistently operating as it was in the past," he said.
Those upset with the mayor's performance plan to picket outside of Highland Park City Hall on Thursday.
