Highland Park Mayor Makes Citizen's Arrest
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - It was a dramatic afternoon for the mayor of Highland Park as he made a citizen's arrest.
Mayor Hubert Yopp said he headed over to the Achievable Visions Conference Center after he got word of a burglary. Yopp said he went inside after the police left, when Department of Public Works workers boarding up the building thought they heard someone inside.
"Myself and the DPW director searched the basment and we found a gentleman hiding down in the basement," Yopp told WWJ Newsradio 950. "We immediately wrestled him to the floor and held him for the police."
"You don't want to give him a chance to pick up something and hit you because I'm not armed with handcuffs like I used to be," said Yopp, who is a former police officer and U.S. Army veteran.
Police arrested the man and confiscated a gas can from the building. It was unclear what charges the suspect may face.
