High Winds Knock Out Power To 20,000 Area Residents
DETROIT (WWJ) - Strong winds in metro Detroit Sunday afternoon have caused about 20,000 DTE customers to lose power and one mobile home owner to lose the roof off their home.
Wind gusts estimated at 55 mph blew the roof off a mobile home near the intersection of Ridge road and Mott road. There were no reported injuries in the incident.
DTE spokesman Len Singer says the outages are concentrated in the Wayne county area.
"I know we have a couple of problems in the Wayne county area, but we are only seeing about four or five significant incidents and we have crews dispatched and working on those," said Singer.
"When we get winds like this, we see tree limbs come down and tree limbs are usually the cause of, of power outages," said Singer. "... I guess if there's a silver lining to this is that winds of this nature are not as significant in the winter as they are in the summer because you don't have the weight of the leaves on the trees."
Singer says crews are working to restore power and they have more on standby, if needed.
