High School Students Suspended After Fight Video Shared Online
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Southfield police are investigating a fight between two girls at the city's high school that was posted to YouTube and shared through social media.
The fight involved two freshman students who both received a 10 day suspension after the attack, which reportedly left one girl unconscious for a couple of minutes.
The video shows one girl pushing the other to the floor, then repeatedly punching her in the face. Other students provoked the girls and cheered before and during the fracas, which lasted a little over one minute.
School spokeswoman Jacqueline Robinson told reporters that staff and security were present at the time of the fight and tried to intervene. She said one teacher was trapped in her classroom by the amount of students crowding the hallway near her door.
Robinson said the girl who was injured the most had initiated the fight. She said the fight lasted so long in part because one girl would not let go of the other girl's hair.
Robinson went on to say the district has a "zero tolerance policy for violence" and school officials are reviewing the video to determine if any other students were involved. She said the student who videotaped the fight, if identified, could face suspension.
"Rest assured that we do not condone irresponsible behavior of any kind. The safety of our students is always our top priority," Robinson said in a statement.
In the meantime, Southfield police say they will review the video frame by frame to determine any possible criminal charges will be filed.
The video has since been removed from YouTube.
