High School Shuts Down After Nearly 200 Sickened
DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ/AP) - Annapolis High School in Dearborn Heights is closed Friday morning after 200 students and staff have been sickened in a suspected norovirus outbreak.
Annapolis High School officials told the Wayne County Department of Public Health that 173 students and 17 staff members started falling ill Wednesday.
The school is expected to be closed Friday while the building is disinfected. Health officials, which think the Norovirus is to blame, said they will do testing to confirm their suspicions.
Norovirus is part of a family of viruses that are spread person-to-person and cause flu-like symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping.
The school is expected to open on Monday, but all weekend activities are canceled.
The school advises parents to keep their kids home in the future if they get flu symptoms, and encourages everyone to use good hand washing practices.
