Watch the Saline Fiddlers rehearse "Camptown Races" and hear from the students about why they participate in this unique program.
The Saline Fiddlers are a group of talented and energetic young musicians. Traveling across the state, the country and internationally, they perform a mix of American folk fiddle, bluegrass, jazz, western swing and Celtic music. The popular extracurricular music program is made up of 8th - 12th grade students from Saline High School in Saline, Michigan.
Artistic Director Ben Culver has put together a polished show including song, dance and powerful sound.
High school junior Louie Remenapp has been playing violin in the Fiddlers for three years. After his parents took him to a show he was determined to become a Fiddler.
Watching the students perform, the attraction is obvious. The music is fun! Remenapp said simply, "We love to play."
Melissa Ungkuldee has also been playing violin in the Saline Fiddlers for three years. Ungkuldee explained how she became involved, "I went to a performance and I just loved it and I said to myself 'I want to do that.'" She added, "Our music has a lot of energy and it's really a lot of fun to perform."
It's not hard to imagine audiences stomping their feet or swinging their partner at this type of concert. Remenapp described a recent show, "When I see kids dancing to our music -- it's a lot of fun."
