High Gas Prices: There's No Going Back To The "Good Ole Days"
DETROIT (WWJ) - By now every driver knows the drill: the price of gasoline ratchets up, there's an outcry among motorists who feel gouged at the pump, and then things settle down as the higher price becomes the new normal. And WWJ's Rob Sanford reports, unfortunately, there's no going back to the "good ole days."
Just recently, USA Today reported that AAA came up with a sobering statistic: the average price of gasoline will surpassed $3.00 per gallon this week for the 1,000th consecutive day. This is something that has never happened before.
AAA's CEO, Bob Darbelnet, says the current streak began on Dec. 23, 2010, and, for most Americans, it's now part of automotive history, like using 8-track tapes or going to a drive-in movie.
"The reality is that expensive gas is here to stay," Darbelnet said.
As of Monday morning, AAA Michigan is reporting that motorists will find the average price of gas up by just over 5 cents this week. Michigan's current statewide average is $3.573 per gallon. Following is a look at average gas prices at major metro areas around the state.
