Hearing To Review Coast Guard's Post 9/11 Security Missions
DETROIT (WWJ) - Michigan Congresswoman Candice Miller will hold a hearing this morning in Washington to review the Coast Guard's post 9/11 security mission.
Miller, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, said the responsibilities of the Coast Guard have increased on a local level.
"There have been many, many cases actually since 9/11 that the Coast Guard has been involved in drug interdiction throughout the Great Lakes region. They are heavily involved and they work very closely with customs and border protection," Miller said.
Since September 11th, the amount of time spent by the Coast Guard on ports and waterway security has increased tenfold.
According to Miller, the hearing will focus on ensuring the Coast Guard is fully equipped to handle all challenges.
"We just really want to take a look at everything that they're doing, that they are resourced properly, and we're going to have the Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Robert Papp with us to discuss all the vital issues and the changing role of the U.S. Coast Guard since September eleventh," Miller said.
Coast Guard responsibilities include terrorism issues as well as environmental calamities.
