Hearing To Focus On Proposed Bridge Over Detroit River
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A public hearing will be held on a proposal from the owner of the Ambassador Bridge over the Detroit River to build a twin span nearby.
The hearing to gather public comment on the plan is scheduled 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Greater Apostolic Faith Temple in Detroit. Speakers who wish to comment must sign up at 4:30 and will be called in order.
The meeting is being hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard, which is reviewing a permit that Detroit International Bridge Co. needs to move forward with the project.
"Southwest Detroit residents remain concerned about the potential for increased heavy truck traffic if a second Ambassador bridge is built," state Representative Stephanie Chang said in a statement. "I encourage residents to come to the Coast Guard hearing to share their comments and concerns about air quality and public health issues."
Lawyers for the bridge's owner also have sought to stop construction of a competing $2.1 billion government span between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Plans call for that project, called the Gordie Howe International Bridge, to open in 2020.
The deadline for submitting comments is Feb. 28. Written comments about the permit can also be submitted via regular mail to Commandant (CG-BRG-2), U.S. Coast Guard Head Quarters, Stop 7418, 2703 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Washington, DC 20593-7418; or via email to allen.m.garneau@uscg.mil.
