Hearing Scheduled On Ex-Mayor's Campaign Fund Use

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A civil complaint seeking $976,000 from ex-Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for using re-election campaign funds to pay legal fees associated with a criminal case will be heard next week in Lansing.

The Department of State said Friday that representatives for Kilpatrick and the Michigan Bureau of Elections are due before a hearing officer Tuesday.

Kilpatrick isn't required to attend the hearing.

He was jailed in 2008 after pleading guilty to misconduct and no contest to assault. The charges stemmed from a text-messaging sex scandal involving a former top aide.

The Bureau of Elections writes in the complaint that the charges arose from personal misconduct and campaign funds shouldn't have been used for legal fees.

Kilpatrick is awaiting parole from prison for violating terms of his probation. His tell-all book,  "Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick" will be released later this month.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
