Hearing Delayed In Romulus Corruption Case
ROMULUS (WWJ) - A hearing to determine if Romulus' former police chief, his wife, and five police officers will stand trial on misconduct, corruption and other charges has been postponed because of the volume of evidence involved.
Defense attorneys say they need time to look over thousands of pages of evidence.
WWJ's Florence Walton spoke with attorney David Lee, who represents Detective Larry Droege.
"Miss. Dawson [Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Lori Dawson] tells me there's 20,000 pages," said Lee. "And in my experience with her and the Wayne County Prosecutor's office, they're always scrupulously honest when it comes to matters of discovery."
Prosecutors accuse former chief Mike St. Andre, his wife Sandra, and former detectives Richard Balzer, Richard Landry, Donald Hopkins, Jeremy Channells and Larry Droege, of embezzling drug forfeiture funds and using the money for personal gain including trips to strip clubs.
If bound over for trial, the seven face multiple felony charges that could land them in prison for up to 20 years.
Another hearing is set for next month.
