Hazing Incident Shuts Down U-M Fraternity
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Hazing allegations have shut down a fraternity at the University of Michigan.
The Detroit Free Press reported that members of the fraternity could face more discipline after the allegations were brought up by the parent of a pledge at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity.
Those hazing allegations reportedly included: hitting pledges with broomsticks, making them drink regurgitated water with goldfish in it, and shooting them with Airsoft guns.
The SAE Michigan chapter has been closed for the year, but can form a new chapter next year. The expulsion from the Interfraternity Council went into effect on March 16, 2011.
According to the SAE website, the fraternity will have to begin a process of redevelopment, as staff and alumni leaders work with members on a plan that ensures they meet all criteria and guidelines for chapter operations.
The fraternity's mission statement is "to promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, and service for our members based upon the ideals set forth by our Founders and as specifically enunciated in our creed."
The SAE organization operates 241 fraternity chapters at universities across the nation. SAE continues to maintain their zero-tolerance policy for hazing and risk-management violations.
