Police Seek Tips In Craigslist Killing
HAZEL PARK (WWJ/AP) - Hazel Park police are on the hunt for a killer. Investigators say that 19-year-old Jonathan Clements of Hazel Park was fatally shot Tuesday night on Crossley Street, where he had arranged to purchase a cell phone.
Police, responding to a 9-1-1 call, found the young man on the ground, moaning. He later died at Beaumont Hospital.
Hazel Park Police Chief David Niedemeier has no doubts that the murder was the result of a robbery linked to an ad that Clements had placed on Craigslist.
Speaking to WWJ, Niedemeier asked if saving those $50 dollars through the classifieds web site is really worth the risk.
"Unfortunately, there's no way to completely safeguard yourself. Meeting in a public place, bringing someone with you -- those kinds of things are definitely helpful, but there's no advice someone can give anybody to completely prevent them from becoming a victim of crime," Niedemeier said.
Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Hazel Park Police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-SpeakUp.
