Harrowing Accident And Fire For Detroiters Celebrating MLK's Historic March
DETROIT (WWJ) There were some harrowing moments over the weekend for a group from Detroit driving to the nation's capitol for the march and rally celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, D.C.
Charles Williams was a bus captain leading about 110 Detroiters on their journey.
Just 20 minutes from the historic Mall, there was a bus accident that injured seven passengers.
"It just shocked us that we were that close and then all of a sudden this happened," Williams said.
But their tribulations weren't over yet. On the way home on Sunday, the bus caught fire, dissolving into a fiery blast of black smoke and metal.
"Once we realized it was a fire, we pulled ourselves together, and got everyone off the bus and moved them away from the bus because there were constant explosions on the rear of the bus," Williams said.
No word on what caused the fire, or the crash.
Luckily, all were evacuated before the fire really took hold.
