Harper Woods Police: Someone Fired Shots At Officer
HARPER WOODS (WWJ/AP) - Police in Harper Woods are trying to discover who fired several shots at an officer while he was on patrol.
WWJ's Rob Sanford said the officer was uninjured in the gun attack, which happened about 2 a.m. on New Year's Day.
The sergeant was on patrol on Kelly Road near Washtenaw when he heard three shots fired very close to his patrol car, said police Chief Jim Burke.
"It's unfortunate to think that someone would shoot at law enforcement, but that's the reality of the situation," Burke told The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens. "We have had some incidents in that neighborhood before, but nothing like this."
After hearing the shots, the sergeant got out of the car, took cover and called for backup, police said.
Other officers arrived, secured the scene and found three spent rounds that hit a building directly above the patrol car's windshield, police said.
"We believe it came from one of the vacant houses in the area," Burke said. "The sergeant was driving down an alley. It's pretty tight in there, and he was in close quarters."
Officers weren't immediately able to find any suspects, although they are looking at the possibility that the shooter was perched in a vacant home nearby.
Police have asked anyone with information on the shooting to call 800-773-2587 and are offering a reward for tips that lead to an arrest and conviction.
