Hamtramck City Manager: Bankruptcy Not An Option
Bankruptcy will not be an option for Hamtramck - at least not this year.
Hamtramck's city manager, Bill Cooper, tells WWJ he met Monday with State Treasurer Bob Kleine and incoming State Treasurer Andy Dillon. Cooper calls it an "interesting exchange," but added the current administration will not allow the city to file for bankruptcy.
Cooper floated the idea earlier this month because the city will be out of money by next February.
Cooper said he expects to have more conversations with Dillon after the new year. The city is re-evaluating loan options from the state and considering other cuts.
As it pertains to a fight with the city of Detroit over payments from the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, Cooper said the city is looking over audits and hoping to petition the court for hearings later this month.
