CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Lions have traded for Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, the Ravens announced Tuesday, minutes before the official start of the new league year.
Ngata, 31, had spent his entire career in Baltimore, where Lions head coach Jim Caldwell and defensive coordinator Teryl Austin both coached before coming to Detroit.
To acquire Ngata, the Lions gave up a fourth-round pick and a fifth-round pick and got back a seventh-round pick, the team announced on Twitter.
For the Lions, Ngata will replace perennial All-Pro Ndamukong Suh, who reportedly agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins during the three-day negotiating period that precedes the start of free agency.
Ngata turned in 31 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions over 12 games in 2014. He was suspended four games at the end of the season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
At least one of Ngata's new teammates quickly reached out to greet him via Twitter.
Ngata will count $8.5 million against the cap for the Lions.
