New Governor To Be Sworn In Saturday
The new year in Michigan begins with a nerd becoming governor.
New Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, who called himself a nerd in campaign ads, will take the oath of office during an outdoor ceremony at noon Saturday at the state capitol. You'll hear live coverage on WWJ Newsradio 950.
Snyder's inaugural speech from the steps of the state Capitol is expected to touch on past Michigan eras and the one he envisions ahead - relying on innovation, teamwork and a culture shift to help shake Michigan out of its economic doldrums.
``Reinventing Michigan is not something that Lansing can do alone. This is not something that government does alone,'' Geralyn Lasher, a Snyder spokeswoman, said this week about one of the themes expected in the incoming governor's inaugural speech. ``This is something that all 10 million of us in the state of Michigan have to be participants in and have to focus on.''
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports the speech will be "pretty traditional."
Snyder, a Republican, cruised to victory over Democratic Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in November's gubernatorial election. He replaces term-limited Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, departing after eight years in office.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will emcee the event that will also feature the swearing in of the new Lt. Governor Brian Calley, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and Attorney General Bill Schuette.
Other highlights of the inauguration ceremony include a fly over by four A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircrafts ("Warthogs") from the 127th Air Wing, a 19 cannon salute and music by the Michigan Army National Guard band.
The inauguration ceremony takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Lansing. The inauguration ceremony is open to the public and free to attend. Those planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early and assemble on the east lawn of the Capitol.
Other public inaugural events include:
--A Gubernatorial Receiving Line at the Capitol Building, Second Floor Governor's Ceremonial Office from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
--Family Entertainment and Refreshments at the Impression 5 Science Center, 200 Museum Drive in Lansing from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
