Gunman Barricaded Inside Overturned Vehicle Threatens To Shoot Police

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A gunman is in custody after leading police on a chase through Macomb County and barricading himself inside his overturned vehicle on Monday night.

Michigan State Police troopers took the man into custody without further incident -- according to the MSP Metro Detroit Twitter page -- after a lengthy standoff at 16 Mile Rd. and Schoenherr Rd. from just after 10 p.m. until about midnight.

MSP Lt. Michael Shaw spoke live with WWJ Newsradio 950's Russ McNamara about the events leading up to the incident.

"Right around 10 o'clock this evening, one of our troopers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle around 22 Mile and Gratiot," "The driver of that vehicle refused to stop and took us on a pursuit down M-59 to 94 then cut across metro parkway before losing control of his vehicle right at Schoenherr."

Shaw said that when troopers approached the vehicle after it crashed, the man said he had a gun and that he would come out firing if police attempted to arrest him.

"It was at that time that troopers backed off, formed a perimeter and now we're in the process of negotiations with this guy, "Shaw said. "Time is definitely on our side, we're hoping for a peaceful solution."

Shaw said that the man spoke with a negotiator and it doesn't appear that he is injured. Officers from several area departments helped state troopers form a perimeter in the area.

"We don't really have to worry about any endangerment to the public, so now it's just an opportunity for us to let maybe some adrenaline subside and then him weigh his options and realize that it's not worth a simple traffic violation to end up with somebody getting injured or killed," Shaw said.
