Group Wants To Rehab Model T Factory Near Detroit

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ/AP) - A group hoping to revive one of Henry Ford's original car factories is turning to the public to raise the final $125,000.

The Woodward Avenue Action Association wants to buy the vacant factory and associated buildings in Highland Park. Ford Motor Co. built the Model T there a century ago.

The buildings were designed by famous architect Albert Kahn. The Woodward Avenue group wants to make the buildings a destination for people who want to learn about auto-related attractions in the Detroit area.

The association says Michigan state government has made a financial commitment, but they're still short of their goal. The group is asking anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the effort to visit their website at www.woodwardavenue.org.

There's a Sept. 19 deadline to acquire the property.
