Group Seeks To Ban Abortion Coverage From Health Plans
LANSING (AP) - Michigan abortion foes have collected enough signatures to put a proposal before lawmakers to ban abortion coverage from health plans unless a separate policy is bought.
The state Bureau of Elections released a review saying the No Taxes for Abortion Insurance group gathered roughly 300,000 valid signatures. They need roughly 258,000.
Michigan's election board meets next week to review the staff recommendation. If the signatures are deemed valid, the Republican-led Legislature can vote on the proposal without needing Governor Snyder's signature.
It goes to voters in November 2014 if lawmakers reject it or don't vote.
