Group Gets 60 Day Extension To Fix Irish Hills Towers
CAMBRIDGE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A group seeking to preserve two deteriorating wooden observation towers built in the 1920s in Michigan's Irish Hills has received a reprieve from local officials.
The Cambridge Township Board voted 4-0 Wednesday to give the Irish Hills Historical Society 60 days to present a comprehensive plan for the towers.
The towers were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, but have been shuttered and closed to the public for more than a decade.
Officials estimate repairs to the Irish Hills Towers would cost $300,000. They're in Lenawee County, about 60 miles southwest of Detroit.
Township officials in April declared the towers a nuisance and gave the society until Aug. 1 to make progress on fixing them.
