Greenfield Road Construction Project Begins July 7, Runs Through October
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Oakland County commuters will soon have another major road construction project to navigate ... this one scheduled to last through the end of October!
Beginning Monday, July 7, southbound Greenfield Road, from just north of 9 Mile Road down to 8 Mile Road, will be completely closed for construction.
"Expect that is will look like a divided boulevard with a median down the middle," said Craig Bryson of the Oakland County Road Commission. "The northbound lanes will now carry both the north and south traffic - one lane in each direction."
He says access to all businesses and Providence Hospital will be available.
"Back when this was done about 14 years ago," said Bryson. "The concrete was put down on a very hot day and that effected the amount of oxygen in the concrete and that caused the concrete not to have the durability that we had hoped it would.
"The concrete that is there is in too bad of shape to just put an asphalt cap on it - it wouldn't last at all - so we are going to tear out the existing concrete. At the same time the city of Southfield is going to put a new water main on the road and curb repair and do some pedestrian cross-walk grades. So it's a pretty significant project."
The $3 million project will be paid for, in part, through a federal grant and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
